Something Borrowed

I read both “Something Borrowed” and “Something Blue” a few years ago and I loved them. They may have been my “beach books” that summer, but they really were fun and entertaining. The film is just that. It not only stays true to the book, I think even if you haven’t read “Something Borrowed” you will still find the film to be a wonderful guilty pleasure.  

I read someone’s review saying how to “realize you are going to see a chick flick where the men will all be one-dimensional supporting players to the more fully rounded women and that the main thrust of the plot will revolve around romantic relationships” (it was written by a male, obviously). Maybe it is just me, but that sounds delightful! I spent many a night watching “Sex and the City” that was just that and it was wonderful! (By the way, the guy actually had a decent review of the movie, which I thought was super cool.)

So far the film has been getting mixed reviews, mostly by critics who never really give these types of fun romantic comedies good reviews anyway.

For awhile a few friends and I had planned on seeing the movie together, a fun girl’s night out. Well plans changed but I had already committed to writing this review and doing a short “vlog” on the movie. So I talked my husband into going, and my sister who did not need to be persuaded. We were running a little late, ended up getting seats in the front row (ugh), we were too late to get snacks or anything, and yet we still thoroughly enjoyed the movie and had a great time!

Ginnifer Goodwin is perfect as Rachel. She is almost exactly what I had pictured when reading the book. Again, I fell in love with her annoyingly loveable character in “He’s Just Not That Into You” and then again here. Ginnifer is perfect in playing these insecure and relatable characters. She has this likeability about her and somehow gets you to end up rooting for her, (which is also a statement to the writing of Emily Giffin) even though she is doing an awful thing to her best friend. Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since they were children. Rachel is the plain, sweet friend who lets Darcy, her selfish, yet outgoing and fun best friend walk all over her. Dex and Darcy are now engaged, but through flashbacks you find out that they actually met through Rachel. Rachel and Dex were in law school together and Rachel lusted after him but never had the guts to say anything.

I will say I was distracted by Ginnifer’s hair, I am not sure if it was because she just revealed on Regis and Kelly that she wears a wig in her films, which I guess we could have figured out since she has been getting shorter and shorter cuts for a couple years, but I just kept wanting to pull her hair back or fix it or just get it out of her face.

Kate Hudson is just a delight to watch. You do get annoyed with her character Darcy, but at the same time she does seem like a lot of fun. I heard Kate say in an interview, you don’t hate her character, she may be the most self centered person ever but she is not malicious or mean in any way. In a weird way you seem to like her, even though you may find yourself rooting against her.

I have always loved John Krasinski since the very beginning of The Office and then his hysterical role in “It’s Complicated”. Well Krasinski brings the same perfect comedic timing to the role of Ethan. He is just excellent at dishing out those hilarious one liners (for instance: "The Hamptons are like a zombie movie directed by Ralph Lauren.") and leaving the audience in hysterics. His delivery is perfect and I found myself just excited when ever he would grace the screen. John is just adorable and I could watch him over and over again in parts likes this. He steals the scene every single time he is on-screen.

Many might think Dex (played by Colin Egglesfield) is the draw, and believe me, he is absolutely gorgeous, but I still think John Krasinski is the one you fall in love with, his sense of humor and charm is just so loveable and he really steals the show. As for Egglesfield, he has the same exact look and smile of a dashing young Tom Cruise and I would also like to thank who ever decided to put him in the pink button down on the beach, unbuttoned and blowing in the wind, nice, very nice.

Roger Ebert said “All of the characters are treated sincerely and played in a straightforward style. It’s just that we don’t love them enough.” Maybe this is the reason for the difference between the good and bad reviews, if you read the book, you already love them. You are more invested in the characters and even their stories that go beyond “Something Borrowed” (if you read both books). So coming to the theater with the background knowledge and history of the characters and then watching some of my favorite actors bring them to life was just delightful.

So whether you are a fan of the book or even just a fan of cute romantic comedies, definitely see the movie, it will not disappoint, and make sure to stay for the credits because there is a little tease that most of the theater left before it came on, but because I was trying to get pics and footage of my husband, my sister, and I, we caught it!
